Understanding is the beginning of confusion
the more I think I understand
the more confused I become.
Love is like that sometimes, it befuddles you
just when you think it's safe to say boo
a gooseberry hits you on the head.
Who was it that said:
Never say ...
oh never mind!
Of course confusion could be
the beginning of understanding
take the chaos theory for instance.
Or scalextrics, subuteo and Alice?
I never could fathom them out either.

I can help you - they're the only three subjects I passed at school!
ReplyDeleteAndy, your poem could have been written for me, with perhaps a change of unfathomable subjects to eg differential calculus and deep metaphors.
ReplyDeleteThat's my kinda stuff - one of 'em any way! Superb.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The more you think, the more confusing things get. For example: How does electricty work? Hmmm. Answer: Flip the light switch, and there is light. Simple, right? That's all I need to know about the confusing subject of electricity!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed this. A fun and thoughtful exploration of understanding and confusion. My favorite line: "oh never mind!"
ReplyDeleteYou are so good at making a poem thoughtful, serious, and fun-simultaneously. I love "just when you think it's safe to say boo
ReplyDeletea gooseberry hits you on the head.
There's probably a Zen lesson that not trying to understand will bring understanding, but I prefer the game of trying and failing. I enjoyed this poem quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteTrying to understand something or someone can be perplexing, Andy. Well done.

Yes, I understand what you're saying..lol...or do I? ;) Seriously, an excellent write that makes you think...and smile!
ReplyDeleteLike this one Andy, especially the line about the gooseberry. Confusion is a tricky thing, sometimes leading to enlightenment, other times to sheer frustration,

The first two stanza hit the nail on the head for the week I've been having...
ReplyDeleteLove your writing, Andy.

This is so well-put:
ReplyDelete"Understanding is the beginning of confusion
the more I think I understand
the more confused I become."
and the opposite next... so intriguing to read and muse.
