NaPoWriMo 2011 Day Twenty Eight

UNDERSTANDING ALICE
Understanding is the beginning of confusion
the more I think I understand
the more confused I become.

Love is like that sometimes, it befuddles you
just when you think it's safe to say boo
a gooseberry hits you on the head.

Who was it that said:
Never say ...
oh never mind!

Of course confusion could be
the beginning of understanding
take the chaos theory for instance.

Or scalextrics, subuteo and Alice?
I never could fathom them out either.

  1. I can help you - they're the only three subjects I passed at school!

  2. Andy, your poem could have been written for me, with perhaps a change of unfathomable subjects to eg differential calculus and deep metaphors.

  4. I agree. The more you think, the more confusing things get. For example: How does electricty work? Hmmm. Answer: Flip the light switch, and there is light. Simple, right? That's all I need to know about the confusing subject of electricity!!

  5. Enjoyed this. A fun and thoughtful exploration of understanding and confusion. My favorite line: "oh never mind!"

  6. You are so good at making a poem thoughtful, serious, and fun-simultaneously. I love "just when you think it's safe to say boo
a gooseberry hits you on the head.

  7. There's probably a Zen lesson that not trying to understand will bring understanding, but I prefer the game of trying and failing. I enjoyed this poem quite a bit.

  10. Like this one Andy, especially the line about the gooseberry. Confusion is a tricky thing, sometimes leading to enlightenment, other times to sheer frustration,

  12. This is so well-put:
"Understanding is the beginning of confusion
the more I think I understand
    the more confused I become."
and the opposite next... so intriguing to read and muse.
