Another Little Song...

Here's a Little Song I wrote four years ago but didn't publish here:

OUR LOVE

(AIN'T MADE IN HEAVEN)

If only we could try to fly

You tell me lies to make me cry

I know you look the other way

Can't bear to be too close to me

No matter what I do or say

There's no future that I can see

They say that love won't be for us

If our love ain't made in heaven

Despite how much I faff and fuss

If our love ain't made in heaven

What happened to the mega crush

Don't think of searching back again

All hell fell out of such and such

Why did you try to change me then

You tell me lies to make me cry

If only we could try to fly

DAY TWENTY THREE

SUCH HEARTFELT LOVE

Only since I found you have I been free

Don't let me go I know that you love me

Who could ever think that I would be thine

The angels proclaim it must be God's will

That you alone were destined to be mine

Whoever you choose I will be there still

No one but you could ever set me free

All lovers know you are the loving kind

And everything you've done you've done for me

Such heartfelt love that only you can bind

Make no mistake no other would I take

With anyone but you I have no use

So hold onto me tightly for my sake

In true love like ours there is no abuse

Don't let me go I know that you love me

Only since I found you have I been free

DAY TWENTY TWO

SHE LOVES ME

And she loves me yeah she loves me alone

You might toy with my joy but we are one

Briefly you came into my life with grief

And even though I so loved you dearly

Could rhyming slang for grief be wailing chief

Clearly yea or nay it must be nearly

We all have sinned so I will excuse ye

Although you love her true I too love her

If it amuses her to abuse me
It doesn't really matter I love her

The pain of losing you is my love's gain

There is no sense of losing more than loss

If you and her find love I lose both twain

Therefore for my sake please spare me this cross

You might toy with my joy but we are one
And she loves me yeah she loves me alone

End line rhymes from Shakespeare's sonnet 42

APRIL TWENTY SEVEN

One of the NaPoWriMo prompts was to write a poem using the end line rhymes of a Shakespeare sonnet. I have done a few of these over the years and had a go at his sonnet 148 today, I hope I haven't made too much of a mess of it.

Here's mine:

SECRET LOVE
I seek your heart and pray that I will find.
My turtle dove, although I may be blind.

Who knows the thoughts that rattle in my head,
O what a night that was O what a sight!
After the first fight everybody fled,
Does no one want to put the world aright?

On you alone my sweet, my eyes do dote,
Who in this world can say that isn't so?
Apart from my love, nothing can denote
Your smile that only I can see, Oh no.

But why O why should only I be true,
Is secret love destined to end in tears?
Not if I have my way, this is my view;
No one can say until the dark sky clears.

My turtle dove, although I may be blind.
I seek your heart and pray that I will find.

HELLO AM I EVEN

TAKING THE TABLETS

Hello am I even taking the tablets

if I rattled like that I wouldn't need them

Did you take your tablets today

she asks me for the third time

I finally tell her that I didn't and

that I won't be taking them again

I read the leaflet that came with the meds

I really don't want to take them yet

all those side effects that mess with your head

which I really really don't want to get

You need to take your medication

she informs me - seriously she says

the Doctor knows best doesn't he

they're for your own good you know

Yeah but - I start to explain to deaf ears

she doesn't want to hear what I have to say

it's more than her job's worth to listen

but I tell her my findings anyway

If I rattled like that I wouldn't need them

Hello am I even taking the tablets no

 APRIL SIXTEEN

THE MERMAID

Where the whales play with you I've got no beef

further out beyond the barrier reef

Don't leave me when the ships bell starts to ring

I first heard your voice from the rose garden

last time the nightingale started to sing

then the mermaid sang I beg your pardon

If only her imagination could

extend from the seashore up to the creek

Without her memories covered in blood

digging for buried treasure all this week

But to the pure of course all things are pure

ships and yachts and different kinds of sloops

Acrobatic society for sure

throwing themselves whooping through all those hoops

Further out beyond the barrier reef

where the whales play with you I've got no beef

APRIL FIFTEEN

THE GENIUS

Blowing hot and cold but never sky blue

she was the genius that we all knew

Dreams confuse me sometimes send me loopy

unwanted dreams wake me in the dark night

Why I really haven't got a Scooby

who needs that kind of nonsensical fight

Sweating I awake unable to sleep

not knowing where I am or what is what

They tell me that everything is so deep

this and that yeah but the rest is old hat

Writing for England she was always mint

now people use her titles for their stuff

She would have loved to see her work in print

of course she did sometimes but life is tough

She was the genius that we all knew

blowing hot and cold but never sky blue

SHE'S MY PEARL

When we start dancing she's over the moon

The audience applaud some of them swoon

So I wrote this little song about you

Someone new with only flowers to bring

I didn't know that my dreams would come true

I thought that you had someone in the wings

Waiting off stage for you to reappear

Don't you know that you're the star of the show

Holding out my hand I wish she was near

But when she appeared we still came to blows

If I had it on my toes would she cry

I know that I for one would miss my girl

Till we met I didn't know I was shy

But she's my girly now yes she's my pearl

The audience applaud some of them swoon

When we start dancing she's over the moon

GLOBAL/NAPOWRIMO 2024 DAY 18

FOR FAMES SAKE

The odds are even if she comes or goes

although who can tell no one really knows

She talks it up but she don't know that we

don't want to know cause we don't really care

there's owt for nowt and nothing don't come free

less a little bit more for her to wear

Those people say they're famous for fames sake

but when they smile I run a mile or three

in another direction to the fake

because you know there's nothing much to see

Then to escape your news I wouldn't choose

to engage with your lurking royal face

on the other hand babe you wouldn't loose

if you chose to choose to come to my place

Although who can tell no one really knows

the odds are even if she comes or goes

GLOBAL/NAPOWRIMO 2024 DAY 17

APART FROM G

Think what you might have been if you were sober

the other no-marks are pushing up daisies now

I wouldn't wish that you were me

toing and a froing going nowhere fast

but it can't last the privilege of the

upper classes up against the unwashed masses

She's seen it all before from her front yard

the fireworks dancing sweet across her street

competing with the Beamer's drum and bass

what a drag but things look proper like they should

Yesterday was much the same apart from G

he should have known that things were getting worse

but she don't tell him the things he ought to know

of course the curtains have been drawn a long time too

All the nobodies are pushing up daisies now

think what they might have been had they been clean

THE DECORATION WAS DIFFERENT

Nothing much has changed but why would it

why indeed should it have

different people come and go

although if they come here they often stay

until they die

We had to take him out in a wooden overcoat

is the accepted response

when asking about an old friend

The decoration was different

but not noticeably apart from the fact that

the ceiling had been painted bright orange

although the manager reliably informed me that

it was actually a subtle shade of tangerine

The bar looked much the same as it always did

although I could tell that it had been refurbished

recently to accommodate several new fangled

beer pumps that were now sitting in pride of place

The decoration was different

but not noticeably

apart from the gigantic TV screens

hanging off each and every wall showing

different sports all night and day

I don't even know why that united pretender

is even playing for England

one of the screen watchers screamed

although no one else really noticed

He might have scored a cracking goal

against that Roy of the Rovers team

a couple of years ago in the mickey mouse cup

but he hasn't done a lot since

and certainly not at this level of football

the irate TV watcher continued

looking away from the big screen in disbelief

How many goals has he gifted the opposition with

over the years and why the Eccles cakes

does this manager stick with him

and pick him for the team every time

moan moan moan mister moaner moaned

The decoration was different

but not noticeably to the casual observer

the ash trays had gone off the tables and

had been replaced by an outdoor smoking hovel

choke yourself to death why don't you

I gave up seventeen years ago

the best move I ever made

as for the beer I can take it or leave it

each to his own poison though and may

whatever turns you on make you happy

The decoration was different

but not noticeably

until I got talking to an octogenarian

he was sipping green tea

and self medicating with cannabis oil

good snuff I quipped trying to make a joke

try some of this united he said to me

it's got antioxidants in it

I think I'll stick to the beer I replied

The decoration was different

but not noticeably

apart from the cocktail bar

and the uniformed bar staff

they were all dressed in tartan waistcoats

white shirts and black Dickie Bow ties

I asked for a whisky and they gave me a menu

we have one hundred and sixty eight

different whiskies they told me

as I perused the stock list

do you not have Irish Whiskey I asked

Oh yes sir of course we do sir three bags full sir

they're on a different menu with the American

Japanese and Canadian Whiskeys sir

Phew this was hard work I only came in for

a quick pint of bitter and a whisky chaser

and here I was with my reading binoculars on

trying to decipher the small print on this daft list

I finally chose a single malt

and then made the mistake of asking for a double

sorry sir said the barman we don't do doubles

you can have a large one if you like

what's the difference I asked tentatively

about seventeen and a half pence he replied

what's that in old money I enquired

hoping to catch the youngster out

three and six sir he retorted without hesitation

okay I said give me two singles

and quickly added in the same glass please

The bottom line is

nothing was different apart from the decoration

ALL THE RAGE

Even when the early bird wakes us up

we don't know what time it is until the clock strikes

Guilty of going somewhere

without really knowing where

why do people think that mistakes

only happen to someone else

The bigger the plan

the further the plot fails

rhythm and rhyme don't cut it

but if you don't know now you never will

From time to time someone will come along

you'll think that you can't resist her

however she's just the cash cow cutting in

she wants your dough all your bread and honey

money isn't everything it's less than half the truth

there's more to life than buying the next best thing

window shopping used to be fashionable

charity shops and bargain stores are all the rage now

We don't know what time it is until the clock strikes

even when the early bird wakes us up

PERISH THE THOUGHT

Brown or white sugar one lump or two

Coffee with or without cream

Like it never happened

He swept the thought of her under the lino

Trampling it down until it was perfectly flat

See he told himself there's no such person

Never has been never will be

If only life was that simple

Perish the thought

Pull the other one

He's finally going to the party as himself

No fake make up

Syrup of figs

Irish jigs

Coffee with or without cream

Brown or white sugar one lump or two

The prompt for today at napowrimo.net -

This prompt challenges you to play around with the idea of overheard language. Now, write a poem that takes as its starting point something overheard that made you laugh, or something someone told you once that struck you as funny.

MY WIFE

Iambic pentameter she's not

You won't find a rhyming couplet under her bonnet

My wife lost ten pounds and she stayed there

Searching everywhere until the lights went out

Waiting at the till for her change perhaps

Went on a diet and lost a bit of weight maybe

How could she whatever was she thinking of

I wouldn't hang around there for too long big bird

After dark the ATM goes into robotic mode

Do you want to tell her or should I

I think she looks wonderful just the way she is

Who told you that she's clean out of money

She was beautiful before she lost all that weight

It's obvious the way she's scratching in her purse

You won't find a rhyming couplet under her bonnet

Iambic pentameter she's not

Napowrimo 2023/my15th year/day 8

Continuing with Shakespeare's sonnets as my theme, I have used the end line rhymes from his sonnet 8 today, and incorporated them into my version of the 'little song'. Interestingly, I believe that along with sonnet 128, number 8 is the only other one in which he mentions music.

DON'T SAY YOU WONT

I'll listen but be happy to hear none

A song from deep within the heart of one

Then one day you upped and left me sadly

The times we had together were such joy

Come home I will welcome you back gladly

Don't say you won't that will only annoy

For there can be no music without sounds

Listen for my voice in your inner ear

Your direction amazes and confounds

You complicate my life too much to bear

Perhaps you have found yourself another

Love, to replace me and my ordering

Of you about, like a second mother

If so I think it's time for you to sing

A song from deep within the heart of one

I'll listen but be happy to hear none

Today's prompt was to write a sonnet, the following is my version of a 'little song', I used the end line rhymes from Shakespeare's sonnet 128 and added a little something of my own. The brief was to write something about music, specifically Hip Hop, (hence the Chip Shop reference) and to get inspired by the object of headphones.

CHIP SHOP CURRY

She offers him her cans for just one kiss

The dancing carries on in spite of this

He shouts out louder and the music plays

Dreamlike you ain't never heard those sweet sounds

He starts rapping and everybody sways

You think that's sweet but it only confounds

All over the stage like a frog he leaps

Giving it rice with microphone in hand

Telling the crew that they've sown what they reap

The music louder than the big band stand

How did she ever get into this state

Chip shop curry mushy peas fish and chips

She loves the locomotion of his gait

Panting she puckers up her sweet sweet lips

The dancing carries on in spite of this

She offers him her cans for just one kiss

CONSTANT BATTERING

The Quack informs me before he starts

five percent of all operations go wrong

The sound of electric drilling

should wake me but doesn't

eclectic electric motors whirring

and jack hammers buzzing at random

Satanic thumping pummelling

and bruising me to angelic buglery

devilish sounds come from somewhere

deep deep down inside my head

Fallen angels bugles and their trombones

sounding like a scratched twelve inch vinyl

my skull cracking open like an egg from the

constant battering of their instruments

More knives than a butchers abattoir

cutting and slicing my skin to smithereens

negative as an unbeliever is empty and

having no faith or hope in the surgery on offer

Five percent of all operations go wrong

the Quack reminds me before he starts

Christmas 1960

JOYFUL ECSTASY

Above the Barber's shop in Timperley

From the cold attic window in my bedge

I saw the real Santa on his sledge

high up above the rooftops and the hedge

nineteen sixty Christmas Eve I believe

the only day it snowed in the village

I fell in disbelief from my bunk bed

onto the wooden floor and hit my head

I went downstairs to check the Christmas tree

to see if Santa left something for me

One thing I didn't get was the train set

but joyful ecstasy the pedal car

that I longed for to race around the yard

Santa Claus must have read the note I wrote

From the cold attic window in my bedge

Above the Barber's shop in Timperley

DAY #23

TALK ABOUT

Never mention the weather don't ever explain

Even if it's snowing there ain't no one to blame

There are some things that we don't talk about

We don't talk about the war

We don't talk party politics

Religion what a bore

There are some things we boast about

We wouldn't go to Waitrose if there's no Aldi store

We'd walk the extra mile

Cos we're cheapskates what a bore

There are some things we talk about

We talk about football (so long as City score)

We talk about the Kippax

And no one is a bore

Even if it's snowing I won't tell you again

Don't mention the weather don't complain
