NOVEMBER THE SIXTH
The firemen go past
here all the time.
Blue light flashing
siren sounding.
They reach their destination
drive round the block
radio in:
"It's another false alarm."
In the morning you walk
past an empty house.
The doors are charred
the glass in the window frames
has gone.
It smells like
November the sixth.

Thanks Jen, I'll visit your site later - November the sixth is the day after Bonfire Night in the UK and everywhere you go you find discarded fireworks and the remains of huge bonfires. It all dates back to Guy Fawkes in the early 17th. century, 'Remember, remember the fifth of November!'
ReplyDeleteAh Guy Fawkes day, been awhile...thank you for the reminder.
