EVEN BRADFORD

Even Bradford looks nice if the sun is shining
But don’t take the bus to the Trafford Centre

To look at the marble floors
And the fossils that they've got there 

Some people say what they need to say

To pervert the course of justice

Perjury was never like that before 
Everywhere looks nice when the sun is shining
Even indoors except for cinemas 

Although it’s cold in the bunker 
They say that something comes before a fall

I think it was pride I hope that doesn't change

The impassioned plea I made to the judge and jury 
I bought some Brooklyn hot and spicy wings
From the nice lady at the street food stall 
To complement the fossils in the marble floor

Not wanting to animate the situation 
Never buy a house when the sun is shining

Today’s prompt (optional, as always) is a little something I’m calling “Twenty Questions.” The idea is to write a poem in which every sentence, except for the last one, is in the form of a question. That’s it! It can be as long or short as you like. The questions can be deep and philosophical (‘what is the meaning of life?’) or routine and practical (‘are you going to eat that?’). Or both!

Why do you come home so late at night

Have you got a bunker mentality

Do you believe I'm the metal guru

Are you obsessed with conspiracy theories

When will you tell me the things that you do

Will you come home for Christmas or Easter

Have you got money to pay for my fare
Do you want dinner at my place or yours

Are you a believer or out to deceive

When will you trust in the gods like I do

Will you arrive on the boat or the flight

Have you got answers to all of my questions

Do you want me to bring anything round

Are you in love with the daffs and the daisies

When will you tell me that our love is true

Will you stay over for more than one day

Have you got weapons if we have to fight

Do you want whiskey or beer or wine

Are you the one that is driving me crazy

When will the curry be ready to eat

What colour are daises she asked again

White I told her before she remembered

Yes I can smell the dandelions too

She said and something else painted yellow

That’ll be the daffodils I told her

Wonderful she said looking for mushrooms

Her bottom lip twitching oh so slightly

An air of expectancy on her face

I think I've found a marigold she said

I walked towards the haunted house with her

When I woke up and turned round she was gone

To sleep right through the barbershop quartet

And only dream that you blew me a kiss

My love for you is such I can’t forget

Although you call me fat and a foodie

I know that you don’t really mean to hurt

Nothing you can say can make me moody

Unless you shout you’re too big for your shirt

If I can keep awake right through the show

One day we’ll be together like we planned

And then the world will really really know

Oh but my listless lifestyle makes me sleep

More lovely than any place he made

Rough winds and rain to come before Easter

Summer’s over before the world cup’s played

And yet a heat wave has been forecast soon

The sick squid all rides free unfair funfair

This week the planets line up with the moon

It’s not coincidence that we’ll be there

But our eternal summer’s still to come

As everything around us fades away

Our fair ground at Platt Fields will still be fun

And the eternal tightrope will not fray

So long as we with third eye still can see

Enslave the queen and this gives life to me

Orange as her brightly painted toes

Shows no shows that come and go and went

Spent like the blue hue of candle light

Night after mellow yellow morning dew

Due to the time of day we try to swing

Bring on the pendulum gone crazy

Lazy as a Sunday afternoon

Tune up the old banjo red balloon

Soon it will be midnight and much too late

To skate and date and double date for fun

One or two of us will be left standing

Banging in the purple rain again

Old Lady Moon she sang a tune

As she mixed up the pottage

She called from her cottage

It’s me that wants to paint the whole house white

Sally was right once you start you can’t stop

After the first wall it’s hook line and sinker

All that vile and peeling Mongolia gone

Gone to goodness knows where under the chair

Like the little mouse that the cat chased there

Gaunt and buried under three layers of paint

Pure brilliant white matt emulsion so clean

Gleaming like a Spanish Urbanization

Up my stairs and down in the old front room

Outside the masonry paint is gleaming too

I want to rename it Casa Blanca

Lancashire was never like this before

The little mouse begins to decompose

NaPoWriMo 2014

Yes, it's fast approaching that time of year again. April is National Poetry Writing Month in America and pretty much becoming International Poetry Writing Month in the rest of the world. I intend to have a go again this year, the idea is to write a poem a day, thirty poems in thirty days. You can scroll down the right hand side bar on this bloggage and check out my previous attempts. This will be my sixth  year, and I hope to complete it once again. If you would like to have a go you can register here, but it's not compulsory. The thing is, it should be fun and you are free to write as little or as much as you like. I will be posting a poem a day on this blog and leaving a link to it on my FaceBook page. I might have a look at some of the prompt sites that you can find with a google search, but I don't really want to commit myself to trawling through and commenting on hundreds of poems. If you have a go this year - good luck!
